Free Methodist Church of North America |
THE FREE METHODIST CHURCH was born in New York in 1860, in the era of the Civil War.
The FREE came from: FREEDOM of the slaves. FREE seats, no practice of renting pews. FREE from entanglements in secret societies & oath-bound lodges. FREEDOM of the Spirit in worship.
On a more contemporary note, the Free can also be understood as drug FREE, alcohol FREE, and FREE to say no to sexual impurity and immorality.
STATEMENT OF DOCTRINE
THERE IS ONE GOD, consisting of the Holy Trinity:
- GOD THE FATHER, the Creator of all that exists, eternal and everlasting. - GOD THE SON, Jesus Christ, who took on human flesh, born of the virgin Mary, was crucified for the sins of mankind, was resurrected from the dead, and will return again. - GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT, that Person of the Godhead active in convicting people of sin, guiding and empowering believers.
THE BIBLE is the inspired Word of God, absolutely authoritative in all matters of salvation and guidance for the Christian life.
MAN has been created in the image of God, but corrupted by the sin nature. Man is free to choose - to do good or to do evil; to receive Christ or reject Him.
SALVATION is by faith in Christ's atoning sacrifice on the cross, not by any good works. Man must first repent of his sins and then receive forgiveness through Christ.
THE FILLING OF THE SPIRIT, or entire sanctification, is a second work of grace whereby a believer experiences empowering for service.
THE SACRAMENTS include baptism and Holy Communion.
